Then, turn the piston tool in the CORRECT direction - if you have a hollow retractor tool, stick a screwdriver through it to turn it, or use a big wrench around it to turn it if it's solid. I have also used channel lock pliers on a Maxima to rotate the piston. Never done either to retract a rear piston - no need since you are not displacing fluid when screwing them in. You are just resetting the ratcheting mechanism.
